Community Medical Services reaches agreement with Cornerstone Care

Community Medical Services (CMS), which has offered preventive medical and dental care in Uniontown for more than 10 years, is now under new management after reaching an agreement with Cornerstone Care Inc., effective May 1.

During the past year, Shelly Raymer Duncan, CMS executive director, said CMS and Cornerstone Care have worked together to make the transition.

“There will be no changes in staffing,” Duncan said. “Dr. Jeremiah R. Shelton will continue to provide dental services. Kate Dhupar, nurse practitioner, and Dr. John Benner will continue to provide medical services.”

Community Medical Services is located on the third floor of Fayette County Community Action Agency Inc.’s Family Service Center, 140 N. Beeson Blvd., Uniontown. Hours of operation for the medical services are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The dental practice is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Robert MtJoy, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cornerstone Care Inc., said the management, organization and name change is very exciting because it will offer many benefits to patients at the medical facility.

Duncan agreed, saying the changes will offer an opportunity for CMS to expand services to its patients.

Within the next few months, Duncan said Cornerstone will add three new dental chairs and a second dentist — the first step in its expansion.

“We look forward to continuing to serve patients in the years to come,” she said. “Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance are accepted. A sliding fee program is available for people who don’t have insurance.”

Cornerstone Care has provided medical, dental and counseling services to residents of Greene, Washington, Fayette and Westmoreland counties for more than 30 years.

The Uniontown center will initially offer primary medical care, including general family practice, annual screenings, well-child care, sick-call visits, healthy women physicals, family planning and immunizations. Other services include gynecology, laboratory services and school physicals. It also provides general dentistry.

Counseling and mental health care, including social services, individual and group counseling sessions and psychiatry, could be added at the Uniontown site in the future, according to Duncan.

“We will continue to provide general medical and dental services, and we could expand those services in the future,” Duncan said.

No changes will be made initially, according to Duncan.

“Most of the changes will be transparent to the patients,” she said. “There will be some differences in forms and billings that the patients will notice.”

The center’s core medical, dental and counseling services apply a sliding fee discount for uninsured people with incomes of 200 percent of poverty level and below.

Cornerstone accepts most insurance, including Medical Assistance and Medicare. Most of the center’s uninsured patients, who are below the poverty level, pay fees as low as $12 for a visit or service that might be billed anywhere from $60 to $150 or more.
